The 12 essentials our guides never hit the trail without — and a few you can leave at home.

After hundreds of guided trips across Sri Lanka's mountains, our lead guides have refined their pack lists to 12 true essentials. Here's what never leaves our leaders' bags.

1. Navigation tools — A topographic map and compass, even when using GPS. Technology fails; paper doesn't.

2. First aid kit — Including blister treatment, muscle pain relief, antihistamines and basic wound care. We train all guides in wilderness first aid.

3. Emergency whistle & mirror — Signalling tools are lightweight and potentially life-saving in the Sri Lankan hills.

4. Rain gear — Sri Lanka's weather changes fast. A lightweight packable rain jacket takes up virtually no space.

5. Headlamp with spare batteries — For pre-dawn starts on sunrise hikes and any unexpected delays.

6. Snack reserve — 500g of high-energy trail mix beyond the planned group food. Energy bonks happen.

7. Water purification tablets — When stream water is the only option, these tablets are non-negotiable.

8. Emergency bivouac — An ultralight space blanket can prevent hypothermia if a group member needs emergency warmth.

9. Rope & carabiners — For technical sections and stream crossings. Not climbing gear, but security rope.

10. Wildlife reference card — Snake identification is surprisingly useful in Sri Lanka's diverse habitats.

11. Multi-tool — The Swiss Army Knife of the trail. More useful than people expect.

12. Personal ID & emergency contacts — Every guide carries a waterproof card with group emergency contacts and the nearest hospital.

What can you leave at home? Heavy DSLR cameras, too many changes of clothes and anything you haven't tested on a shorter hike first.
